Celtic’s title bid hangs on by a thread and if the team is serious about taking the title back to Celtic Park then the boys are going to need to stop letting in sloppy goals and even more so, stop missing chances in front of goal.
With Neil Lennon, the Celtic boss, in the market for another striker it would seem not even he has much confidence in the boys that currently take up the forward line. With the likes of Daryl Murphy and Georgios Samaras regularly taking to the field I’m never filled with much hope.
Then there is Anthony Stokes, surely a very decent player. During his time at former club Hibernian, Stokes netted 22 goals in 40 appearances proving that in an average squad he could score a lot of goals. However, since his move to Celtic Lennon has adjusted and tinkered with the team regularly affecting his playing time and his own game.
With Gary Hooper frequently getting injured just when it looked like he was going to hit form it has been a frustrating season for the little fox in the box. Of all Celtic’s strikers I am filled most with assurance when Hooper is playing. The former Scunthorpe man is very much in the mould of former Parkhead favourite Scot McDonald and it seems he too can score goals out of very little.
The midfielders must also take on a certain amount of responsibility. It would seem they have done so with Maloney, McCourt and Ki all netting at least 3 times. Maybe my diagnosis of the Celtic front line is a little premature as Celtic remain topscorers in the league. Should I be analysing Celtic’s leaky defence as it would seem it is them who are fault for the team dropping points?
One thing is certain though, Celtic’s defensive shortcomings are known, but Celtic’s lack of an exciting player to lead the forward line is proving frustrating for not only the fans but the manager too. So it will be interesting to see who Celtic go for this January or next summer.
