Speaking to talkSPORT Radio, former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has warned potential new Rangers manager Steven Gerrard of the pressures that will come with being appointed at Ibrox.
What’s the story?
Strachan knows a thing or two about being a manager in Glasgow, making himself a hero as Celtic boss in the mid-2000s. He also knows all about when things don’t go so well after an ill-fated 2008/09 season that saw Rangers crowned champions.
He’s often spoken about the pressures that come with managing in the city and his latest comments serve as a warning to potential Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard, who has never managed a senior side before.
The former Scotland manager referenced another Liverpool legend who came to Scotland and was ill-prepared to handle it all.
As quoted by talkSPORT, Strachan said:
You can look back at John Barnes going to Celtic. John knew the game, worked with the best managers, a clever man, an educated man. You go there and think ‘I can deal with this’. No, you can’t.
I was 48, 49 when I joined [Celtic]. I had worked at Premier League clubs, with Sir Alex Ferguson and all these kind of people, had done my time, was ready to go again, got the opportunity and thought I could deal with it.
Three weeks in, I thought ‘oh dear’.
I’ve never felt so alone in my life.
Certainly words to heed for Gerrard, who is expected to continue discussions with Rangers today about the prospect of taking charge of the Light Blues.
Can Gerrard adjust?
There’s no doubt that Gerrard’s distinguished playing career as a leader in the Liverpool dressing room demonstrates he should have some sort of aptitude for club management, but the Rangers job is a massive one to take as a rookie.
He would command a certain respect from players given his standing in the game but there are other factors to consider such as a much smaller budget in comparison to Celtic, unrealistic expectations of what he can achieve and the enormous media glare that will be put on every small action he takes.
A smaller club in the English lower leagues would be an ideal arena to cut his teeth in for a first job, with the Rangers opportunity just looking like too much of a risk for both Gerrard and the club itself.
There’s a chance it could work out perfectly, but it seems far more likely to end in tears given the recent goings on at Ibrox.
