As reported by The Sun, Liverpool have been boosted in their pursuit of Schalke midfielder Max Meyer after his club confirmed he’s likely to leave at the end of the season.
What’s the story?
Meyer’s contract expires in the summer and as a result he could leave in a bargain compensation deal rather than the kind of fee that’s usually required to attract a player with his potential.
The Sun say that amongst his potential suitors are Liverpool, who have been watching his progress all season ahead of a potential move during the summer transfer window.
The paper reckon Jurgen Klopp is a longtime admirer of the midfielder, having watched his rise from youth football through to first team action.
Now his club have confirmed it’s likely he’ll leave at the end of the current campaign.
As quoted by The Sun, Schalke director Christian Heidel said: “At the moment we can and must expect that Max leaves the club in the summer. Everything suggests that. There is no offer from us and no wish from Max to have a conversation again.”
Those are comments that paint a rather frosty situation at the Bundesliga club, can Liverpool capitalise and bring him to Anfield?

Good enough for the Reds?
Deployed in a primarily defensive midfield role, Meyer is the kind of player that can add more stability to Liverpool’s dynamic midfield, perhaps a replacement for the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum who has produced fluctuating form this season.
With close to 150 Bundesliga and 34 European appearances to his name, he has plenty of experience under his belt that would serve him well at Anfield.
Rated at £14.4m by Transfermarkt, bringing him to the Premier League in a bargain deal could prove to be a shrewd bit of business by the Reds, especially if Klopp can help unlock the 22-year-old’s potential.
