All of a sudden there’s the prospect of nervousness at Elland Road.
Leeds once again looked like they were going to comfortably romp to an automatic promotion spot a few weeks ago, and while that may still happen, two poor performances in a row and a very demanding fixture list make a Christmas capitulation look a lot more likely than it did last month.
Indeed, Leeds threw away a three-goal lead against Cardiff before losing to Fulham in their previous two games, and with matches against three of the top five on the horizon, Marcelo Bielsa must do everything in his power to make sure his side don’t continue to drop points.
The festive period was always going to be tough for the Yorkshire club. Games come thick and fast, and Bielsa’s intense training regime has often led to his teams burning out, even in leagues where there is a winter break.
The Argentine now has to manage five games in 17 days, and with three of those fixtures coming against genuine promotion contenders, he has a real job on his hands in terms of rotating his squad.
Unfortunately, his best course of action may be to sacrifice Leeds’ chances of an FA Cup run by playing a heavily rotated side filled with youngsters against Arsenal.
The fact of the matter is that it’s going to be nigh on impossible for Bielsa’s small squad to cope with that many games at the intensity the Argentine demands in such a short period of time, and his key men will need a rest.
The game against Arsenal not only offers Leeds a bit of respite from league action but this opportunity to rotate could also see more depth added to the squad. That’s if young players appear in that game show that they’re capable of performing at a high standard.
This change has the potential to kill two birds with one stone.
